Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), sometimes aka Personal Protective Apparel (PPA). Mostly this page is about decapsulation TLDR: * Ideally use a fume hood * H2SO4 will put out less corrosive fumes at decap temperatures, although it will smell really bad (and could have long term health risks) * HNO3 puts off NO2. Minimize release by working at lower temperatures, covering, and venting gas * Consider using a respirator ====== Respirator ====== McMaster likes the [[https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/3M-Full-Facepiece-Reusable-Respirator-7800S-L-Large-Silicone-1-EA-Case/?N=5002385+3294780248&rt=rud|3M 7800S]] full faceplate respirator. If you don't use a full faceplate respirator, you should also use a face shield or safety glasses. Tips: * They came in different sizes, such as 7800S-L (large) * For longest life, store opened cartridges in a plastic bag (absorbs CO2 from atmosphere) * Replace periodically or sooner if you smell fumes * Consider dating when you open them * Filters reduce concentration of acid gases, but does not eliminate them * Will not provide adequate protection against dense acid gas * ie don't stick your head over something spewing red gas * FWIW you can get an oxygen tank for these * Acid gases will still burn skin when concentrated * Face shield replacement: I found its less expensive to buy a new unit surplus than it is to replace the face shield * I (mcmaster) only use filters that protect against acid gases and particulates since I do mixed work * Uses P100 filters * Evidently there is a standard that P100 filters are pink. So if its not pink, it probably won't fit * Following are listed as P100 acid gas w/ particulate filter * 60922 Cartridge/Filter, Acid Gas/P100 * 60923 Cartridge/Filter, Organic Vapor/Acid Gas/P100 * 3M 60923HB1-C * These might be lowest cost surplus * [[https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/3M-Multi-Gas-Vapor-Cartridge-Filter-60926-P100-60-EA-Case/?N=5002385+3294780252&rt=rud|60926 Cartridge/Filter, Multi-Gas/Vapor/P100]] * IIRC I (mcmaster) typically use these * 60928 Cartridge/Filter, Organic Vapor/Acid Gas/P100 * "As recommended by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation No. 01-009-Methyl Bromide Field Fumigation" * OSH sells these, although I tend to buy them surplus online * 2017: usually $10-15 surplus, $20-25 new
