Live decap millling
Above: HSS endmills are relatively inexpensive (above were about $3 each) and work reasonably well. They may be a better option than more expensive endmills that last slightly longer
2021-12-29: McMaster has recently been using RFNA (instead of WFNA) which seems to be much faster on epoxy. Fast enough that I'm no longer pre-milling chips. This tends to be faster overall and removes risks of milling (damaging bond wires, etc)text/html2023-09-04T07:46:50+00:00mcmaster (mcmaster@undisclosed.example.com)decap:laser

Epoxy
TLDR: bulk material for standard packages can be removed using a fiber laser. However, a CO2 laser will not work (lower peak power => melts silica instead of ablating it). However the laser will damage the die surface if you try to go all the way to the surface (without using a special setup like FALIT). Finally, COB epoxy appears to be workable even with a CO2 lasertext/html2023-09-04T07:42:51+00:00mcmaster (mcmaster@undisclosed.example.com)decap:epoxy

Getting started
Probably the easiest to get a hold of is H2SO4. If you are in USA, you can easily buy it from <https://www.dudadiesel.com/> Alternatively some drain cleaners (Liquid Fire brand) are concentrated H2SO4. Use this in combination with a heat gun in a test tube to be able to quickly heat up and decap ICs. FIXME: this page is a few things merged together. It was cleaned up after the intruded.net crash and so needs to be re-cleaned up
This page describes various chemical solutions applied to ICs for various effects. Primary reasons:

Enhancing contrast
Suggestions:
* Wet with fluid
* Apply tape
* Use oblique illumination
* Polarized light
