Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), sometimes aka Personal Protective Apparel (PPA).

Mostly this page is about decapsulation

TLDR:

Ideally use a fume hood
H2SO4 will put out less corrosive fumes at decap temperatures, although it will smell really bad (and could have long term health risks)
HNO3 puts off NO2. Minimize release by working at lower temperatures, covering, and venting gas
Consider using a respirator

Respirator

McMaster likes the 3M 7800S full faceplate respirator. If you don't use a full faceplate respirator, you should also use a face shield or safety glasses.

Tips:

They came in different sizes, such as 7800S-L (large)
For longest life, store opened cartridges in a plastic bag (absorbs CO2 from atmosphere)
Filters reduce concentration of acid gases, but does not eliminate them. Will not provide adequate protection against dense acid gas
- ie don't stick your head over something spewing red gas
- FWIW you can get an oxygen tank for these
Acid gases will still burn skin when concentrated
I found its less expensive to buy a new unit surplus than it is to replace the face shield
Uses P100 filters
- I (mcmaster) typically use 3M P100 60926 Multi Gas / Vapor filter cartridges
- OSH sells these, although I tend to buy them surplus online
- 2017: usually $10-15 surplus, $20-25 new
