Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), sometimes aka Personal Protective Apparel (PPA).

Mostly this page is about decapsulation

TLDR:

Respirator

McMaster likes the 3M 7800S full faceplate respirator. If you don't use a full faceplate respirator, you should also use a face shield or safety glasses.

Tips:

  • They came in different sizes, such as 7800S-L (large)
  • For longest life, store opened cartridges in a plastic bag (absorbs CO2 from atmosphere)
  • Filters reduce concentration of acid gases, but does not eliminate them. Will not provide adequate protection against dense acid gas
    • ie don't stick your head over something spewing red gas
    • FWIW you can get an oxygen tank for these
  • Acid gases will still burn skin when concentrated
  • I found its less expensive to buy a new unit surplus than it is to replace the face shield
  • Uses P100 filters
